Think of your Period as your Report Card for the month

Updated: Apr 10

Did you know your period is your report card for the month? It tells us so much about how you've been eating, if your liver is being effected by alcohol intake or methylation issues, are you deficient in certain nutrients and how stressed have you been...among many other things. So it offers a wealth of information!

When you go to see a Naturopath they ask a lot of questions about all your body systems, including the reproductive one. Why do you ask? Because it can provide us with such a wealth of information! Which is vital to understand, particularly if the client has issues with their hormones, reproductive or menstrual function, or infertility.

So what can the various symptoms associated with menstruation mean?

Here are 1 or 2 of the connections a good Naturopath will consider.

Blood should always be bright red. If its brown then the uterus function may be impaired, as the endometrial layer isn't sloughing off correctly. Uterine stagnation could be an issue.

Its not normal to have cramps and pain. This can indicate uterine stagnation or magnesium deficiency.

Clots can indicate that the liver function is needing support. Sore breasts can also indicate blocks with the liver meridian.

Craving sweets and chocolate may be due to having insulin resistance or low progesterone (or oestrogen dominance). When you menstruate your blood sugars drop.

Do you get a vaginal itch prior to your period? Chances are you have a sub-clinical fungal infection such as thrush from the candida yeast.

Have you suffered from reoccurring bloating or gain weight prior to menstruating? Likely you have some issues with fluid retention and the hormone aldosterone.

Feeling blocked up prior to menstruating? The hormone progesterone can lead to digestive disturbances including constipation. Because levels of progesterone rise during the second half of the menstrual cycle, constipation can be present in women with PMS.

These are just some of the questions that I'll ask my female clients. I also love to do a form of functional testing called DUTCH which helps me to better understand the balance of the hormones in the reproductive system.

If you have these symptoms and want some solutions feel free to book in a consultation with me!

Shine bright, Nic
